Bribing Kids with Candy in the Public Schools
I got a call today from a friend of mine whose child is in first grade at the local public school. She’s frustrated and just doesn’t know what to do. Turns out the first grade teacher bribes the kids to be good and do their work with candy! Plus she is telling parents that they need to donate x amount of bags of candy each month to the classroom. What???
This is insane. This is going to be the teacher who has a 100% claim that every kid in her classroom is ADD, because they are all high on sugar all day. This is also a teacher teaching in a school district that has recently banned pop machines in the schools because that was promoting sugar to the kids.
My friend is too afraid to speak up. She doesn’t want to ruffle the feathers. I know where she is coming from. If you speak up about something you don’t agree about at the public school, you are classified as a “problem parent” and your child ends up getting the brunt of it.
Her main concern is that her child is learning to expect a great treat for doing something that he should be doing anyway. She said it’s already causing problems at home because he expects to be rewarded with a treat for doing anything he is told.
It’s such a shame to have such nonsense instilled in our youth. And it’s such a shame that teachers have no sense of control over the classroom anymore that they have to use candy to bribe our kids.
